The TV Listings (2)

Well, it's been over 6 months since I posted the first catalogue of my YouTube postings, and there have been heaps more of them since, so I suppose I'd better attempt a second round-up for you. Here goes.

The Comedy/Movie Channel

Ping-pong's coming home! - Boris Johnson launches the promotional bandwagon for London's 2012 Olympics.

Ain't no weather man - Annie Varner's superb transcription of the lyrics to a Christina Aguilera song.

Everyone wants to be Tony Soprano - a collection of homages to The Sopranos' famous opening sequence, and an hilarious little MAD TV parody of the show.

Getting in touch with my 'feminist side' - Danwei TV's 'Sexy Beijing' series goes vox-popping to find out what the locals think about gender equality on the eve of San Ba, Women's Day.

The Inbetweenies - a great song on the problem of being both too old and too young to attract women, by '70s British comedy trio The Goodies, accompanied by a montage of clips from their show.

I second that advice - the classic moment from Animal House where Bluto tells Flounder to "start drinking - heavily".

More great 'Bluto' moments - a selection of great scenes from Animal House featuring John Belushi's iconic 'Bluto' character.

"It's for charidee, mate!" - Aging DJs Smashie and Nicey (Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield) compare the benefits of a night out and a night in.

It makes you think, doesn't it? - The Philosophers' Football Match from Monty Python.

The Music Channel

Dogs & Mad Englishmen - the sublime Noel Coward sings one of his most celebrated songs.

'Spazz' , the lip-sync marvel (again) - this time performing David Bowie's Life on Mars.

Three Lions - England's rousing, poignant Euro '96 theme song: the original video, and a later version incorporating clips of England's defeat and the victorious German team singing our song.

'Spazz' sings Queen - Stone Cold Crazy: brilliant!

Politically incorrect - the Genesis video for Illegal Alien (they couldn't do that today!).

Art, philosophy, music - The Crash Test Dummies' God Shuffled His Feet.

It sounds like a whisper - Tracy Chapman sings Talkin' About A Revolution at the Nelson Mandela Birthday Concert.

Blogger summit meeting - in honour of the annual Beijing Bloggers' Dinner, I post clips of The Teddy Bear's Picnic, and a number of versions of novelty classic The Monster Mash (best of which is a '60s British TV performance by the irrepressible Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band).

Downtown Train - Tom Waits's finest moment, or one of them.

Indie Rock Is Dead - an outrageously hooky song by my favourite Beijing band, Ziyo.

South Australia - the traditional shanty sung by Fishermen's Friends, a choir of fishermen from St Isaac's in Cornwall; also a rather stunning instrumental version of the song by Australian guitar finger-picking virtuoso, Tommy Emmanuel.

Hallelujah - the sweet love song from the end of Fairground Attraction's First Of A Million Kisses album, sung by the divine Eddi Reader live in Sydney.

In honour of Bastille Day - a selection of clips of La Marseillaise, performed by Mireille Mathieu in front of the Eiffel Tower, a Renault Formula 1 racing car engine, and the cast of Casablanca. Also - Celine Dion gargles My Heart Will Go On!

That Feel - a great drinking song from Tom Waits and Keith Richards.

I'm free! - I celebrate the end of a particularly arduous teaching engagement with a burst of The Soup Dragons.

There She Goes - The La's near-perfect pop hit.

Dino! - the ultra-suave 'Unsuitable Role Model' Dean Martin sings his signature hit, Little 'Ole Wine Drinker Me.

You Look So Fine - a love song that has unfortunately powerful resonances for me; sung by the lovely Shirley Manson of Garbage.

Why can't you be me? - I try (in vain!) to encourage readers to sub-let my apartment for the summer by posting Robert Smith and The Cure singing Why Can't I Be You?

A drinking song double-header - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer by the great John Lee Hooker, and I Drink Alone by George Thorogood.

Crying - K.D. Lang sings the great Roy Orbison hit live (plus a link to the video of her original duet with Roy).

A St. Patrick's Day treat - a number of versions of classic Irish folk song The Seven Drunken Nights, performed by The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers, and The Dropkick Murphys.

I Fall To Pieces - performed by the inimitable Patsy Cline (also a link to Crazy).

He Got All The Whiskey - great performance by little-known English folk star John Martyn, with Eddi Reader on backing vocals.

Godfrey Daniel - a marvellous parody of Elton John's portentous meaninglessness, performed by Neil Innes on the shortlived BBC2 show Rutland Weekend Television.

The Sports Channel

The greatest tennis match of all time? - the climax of Jimmy Connors' epic semi-final tussle with Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon in 1981.

Pelé - the "God" - a selection of clip compilations of the world's greatest football player

Great football moments - a Top 10 greatest goals from the history of the European Championships (Gazza at No. 2) and Skinner & Baddiel singing Three Lions (see also The Music Channel, above).
