Naughty, but nice

Today's poetry browsing turned up this old favourite by D.H. Lawrence.

I hope this doesn't seem too jaded of me (I am in fact, despite some bad experiences, eternally optimistic on the matter of love); it's not the bitterness of this I love, but the zestfulness, the wit - I don't know anything else of his that's so damned funny.

Intimates

Don't you care for my love? she said bitterly.

I handed her the mirror, and said:
Please address these questions to the proper person!
Please make all requests to headquarters!
In all matters of emotional importance
please approach the supreme authority direct!
So I handed her the mirror.

And she would have broken it over my head
but she caught sight of her own reflection
and that held her spellbound for two seconds
while I fled.

D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930)

Lawrence, yet another fabulous poet. do you fancy you see yourself in that looking glass?

"It is my modest hope that people might start reading this because of WHO I am, not WHERE I am."

;)

No Doubt, were your reflection to fall into anyone's line of sight, they would be reading this blog. Perhaps you should comment more on other blogs?

Hmm, or maybe not, I'm not sure how I'd feel about the comments section getting crowded... or how I feel about crowds, in general. My natural inclination is to spend my days much like I described as option 'C' in a previous comment, but having chosen to live in ****, I can hardly claim to be unable to handle crowds. But I guess the question isn't the ability to handle, it's the preference, right?

We all know where your preference lies. But where does mine? Let me borrow that mirror and get back to you on this.

I'll leave you with this quote whilst I ponder the question: Anyhow he gives large parties and I like large parties. They're so intimate. At small parties there's never any privacy.

And I'll leave it to you to tell me who said it ;) I'd say "no cheating by using the web" but I know your web access is miserable, so no worries, there.

Hi 'Tulsa',

I too suffered the vexing disappearance of the comment-reply I tried to post for you last night. The Blogger interface is so glitchy at the moment, I think I'll have to get in the habit of 'Copy & Pasting' everything I write into Word as a backup.

Let's see. I had a sudden brainwave as to who you might be.... and then suffered a crisis of confidence as to whether this hunch could be correct or not. Two of my original candidates have been eliminated because they'd been in ***** quite some time (and one of them has now moved to Ireland), whereas you tell me you are still here, but a relatively recent arrival. I think my shortlist is now down to TWO.... although I might be forgetfully, foolishly overlooking the correct solution to the riddle. Forgive me.

Anyway, I wouldn't 'out' you on this public forum, even if I were more confident of your identity. If you want to 'play' for a while - let's play!

Would you care to answer one or more of the following questions? a) How often have you met me? b) Have we ever had dinner together? c) Have you ever been to any of the bars I commemorate over on Barstool Blues (other than the 9:30 in DC, that is), and if so, which ones, and was I there at the time? d) Do you do yoga? (This last one isn't necessarily that much of a help because, as I'm sure you know, just about EVERY foreign woman in this city does yoga!)

As to your quotation.... well, I don't recognise it, but.... literature's most celebrated party-giver was surely Jay Gatsby. I haven't read the book for YEARS, but the line does seem to have that sardonic, Jazz Age wit. So, that's my guess. Am I right?

Oh, and regarding Tulsa's kind suggestion that I should try to bring these little blogs of mine to more people's attention by commenting more often on other blogs - well, I have thought about it, but.... I comment on blogs when I feel I have something to say, not as a desperate stratagem of self-promotion. (I have commented quite a lot on Will Moss's blog; but that seems to be in abeyance at the moment - and it's not on Blogger, so it wouldn't lead people here anyway.)

And I'm curious to see how far I can get my readership up by 'word of mouth' alone.

I don't think there's any danger of us becoming crowded out on these comment threads any time soon!

By the way, Tulsa, which blog did you find a comment of mine on?

re: which blog, maybe the hummanaught? i'm not sure.

re: playing at who I am, it's not thaaaat serious - I'll tell you who I am when I see you next. I just generally post anonymously, for much the same reason you blog anonymously. It just makes sense to do so in ****, lest we inadvertantly say something censorship worthy.
