The weekly haiku

The horror of change,
Paralysis of the will...
The time for leaving.

I need to make ready to quit the country in 3 or 4 weeks. I realised this about 3 or 4 weeks ago. During that 3 or 4 weeks, I have done precisely nothing about it. There's procrastination, and then there's....  Oh dear.

I know the feeling well. Good luck.

By the way, as a fellow follower of OMF, do you know what has happened to Tony? He hasn't blogged for two weeks now.

Gosh, is it that long?

I notice that the two mysterious blank posts that had gone up have been removed again, so that's activity of a sort. I hope he's just been on holiday, rather than suffering health troubles or something.

I'll drop him a line to enquire.

Thanks and best wishes.

Why are you leaving China? And where are you going...?

Mothman, what brings you here?!

The government is having panic attacks about a suddenly stagnating economy, the Bo Xilai scandal, the leadership handover, etc., etc. Hence, it is becoming impossible to get visas. It's like the Olympics all over again - only worse.

I have no idea where I might go next. I am, as ever, broke, unemployable, and wracked by dodgy health.

Will probably have to try to return to China for a while later in the year (my apartment is rented until the end of November), to "wind up my affairs"... i.e., try to arrange to ship my DVD collection somewhere. But I'm planning to spend two or three months back in England over the summer.

Well, I'll probably try to head over to the States for a bit. Also tempted to go for a wander around the Baltic Republics, scouting for a possible relocation (cute women, cheap beer, reasonably robust economic prospects).

Where are you likely to be over the next few months - Bulgaria, Guatemala??

Indelibly bored with life and fed up with the weather, hence resorting to web-based jollies...

Haven't been to Guatemala in years. Not likely to be in Bulgaria in the near future either. Looks like it's the bloody UK for me for the foreseeable. Mention not the dread word 'recession'.

Sorry to hear that you too are now being plagued by visa problems - having suffered from those all of my life I was beginning to wonder when China might catch onto the regressive idea of control of movement of labour. Sigh.

I don't know Lithuania but I can strongly recommend Sofia as an expat. hang-out...rather similar atmosphere to Beijing, I'd imagine - touch of the post-communists; immensely cheap booze; women to die for (yes, really) and enough dodgy characters to stir the Graham Greene side. But the bonus of a language that is more-or-less learnable. And if you get fed up with the Big City I can send up my driver to pick you up and whisk you in air-conditioned comfort down to my pad (complete with pool) on the Greek border to lounge in the sunshine with your favourite bikini-ed beauty of the moment. Or a crate or two of 'Zagorka' (the local ultra-cheap brew) depending on what takes your fancy. After all, no other bugger seems to want to rent the f***ing place :-)

So maybe see you in Oxford a bit later in what passes for a 'summer' in the yUK..? You going to the Drain-Sucker's Eights Week Reunion bash? Was invited, but not really my bag...would have been drummed out of the regiment for enquiring tenderly whether assorted merchant wankers (and fellow travelers) couldn't get more morally laudable jobs as pimps or arsonists.

PS for 'traveler' read 'traveller'...

Oh, and here's a joke wot I made up that you may (?) appreciate:

Q: "Why are they called 'Bankers'?"

A: " 'cos 'Wastards' sound stupid"

Have a nice day :-)

Very good, Mothman.

Yes, I am hoping to be back for the great gathering. I am slightly dreading (a couple of the names mentioned were complete tossers), but I believe Mr Sharman is going to try to come over from the States. And it would be nice to see Mr O'Flynn again as well, if he can make it over from Ireland.

Elizabeth, I have heard briefly from OMF's Tony. He has indeed been having some health troubles and was in hospital for a couple of weeks. He's home again now, but it sounds rather serious.

Thank you and good luck with your relocation.
