Thanks for the Wikipedia link; before I commented, I wanted to be sure it was the same James Stephens I was thinking of -- and wasn't confident that the line came from that book.

I love The Crock of Gold; loved it from the first sentence. (I've not read anything else he wrote, but that one book -- well, if I'd left a legacy like that, I'd have been very happy to look back on my life.) It was on the syllabus for a college course in fantasy and SF. When the semester finished, I couldn't imagine why I'd never before heard of half the books I'd just read (answer: I wasn't as well-read as I thought I was!). The Crock of Gold was at the top of the list.

It seems to be accessibly brief. I'll have to try and read it online.
