I think it means that we are often moved by things without understanding why; or, if we understand why, we are embarrassed at our susceptibility to the trite, ashamed of the frequent compromising of the 'good taste' we aspire to.

My interpretation is a bit more banal.

Gilbert being a proper Papal Knight and all, I don't think he could allow himself to be as crass as Larry David and Jerry, but I think they were getting at the same thing.
