Haiku for the week

Eyes smart and throat rasps;
World shrinks to a dull brown blur;
The air full of sand.

Ah, autumn in Beijing.  Less of the "mellow fruitfulness" but plenty of the mist.  And cold, damp air traps pollution near the ground - notably the heavy particles from all the construction work going on around town.  The last couple of days it has actually been dangerous to go outside.  Today looks as if it is going to be a little better.  A little, but not that much.  Ugh.

...meanwhile, in northern Florida USA, autumn seems finally to have broken the back of an especially awful late summer. The only (small) drawback to this is that walking The Pooch requires garbing her as well as leashing her (she's so small she's practically insulation-proof on her own). This makes urgent calls of nature a little tricky to answer.

But at least you don't have to get her/him a smog mask.

Beijing at the end of last week was apocalyptic.
