Bustle of the city stilled.
Holiday torpor.
I hate the holidays in Beijing. The cessation of 'normal' life for a week at a time is inconvenient, depressing. I am too poor to escape anywhere for a holiday break, and the seething hordes of Chinese tourists make it pointless to try to go anywhere in or around Beijing. But at least people get up a little later in the morning, and the traffic on the roads is much reduced - especially on this first day proper of the hols. It's not a profound hush, but it's about as quiet as this city ever gets: a relatively restful start to the day.
