The constant rumble
Torments our sleep, shreds our nerves:
A city at war.

This is one of the most depressing things about this interminable bloody holiday: it really does sound like gunfire. It smells like it, too; the stench of gunpowder was heavy in the air today. I can't help thinking that this is what this city must have smelled like on the morning of June 4th.

I was amazed at the constant noise on Diwali when I was in Bangalore. Never stopped.
