I have noticed that there is one circumstance in which Beijing drivers will slow down for a pedestrian attempting to cross the road.
The driver approaching you in the lane you are about to cross will slow down to a CRAWL if, and only if......
i) there is still not enough time/space for you to cross the lane safely in front of him; AND
ii) the driver approaching you in the lane you're still standing in is accelerating.
This really doesn't seem to happen anywhere else I've been in China. Only here in the capital is everyone behind the wheel of a car a lamebrained psychopath.
