Thanks for the reminder about the weather machine -- I'd forgotten it since first reading about it in your Olympics posts of last summer. Couldn't figure out if it was on the level or just an urban legend or what. But of course (e.g. the Los Angeles Times, from as long ago as January 2008) it's perfectly a straight story.
Unlike the Manchester Guardian's "British weather machine" story, rated by the Hoax Museum as #51 in the Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes of All Time.
